Aliso Creek SUPER Project

Two project threatening Aliso Creek

Super Project

The first is the Stabilization Utility Protection Ecosystem Restoration (SUPER). The project proposed by the County of Orange to stabilize the existing natural creek location by channelizing the existing edges with concrete and by building a series of dam-like structures.

26 cement dam-like structures are proposed along the creek. These structures along with the channelizing on either of the dams will alter much of the natural creek habitat. Construction for these dam structures will force the removal of over 70 acres of vegetation and trees, destroying the fragile creek side ecosystem that exists today. 1 million cubic yards of earth will be moved during construction of this proposed project.

The project’s main goal is to stabilize the creek, which has seen its water flow and velocity increase due to development upstream. The project will do nothing to improve this situation. The project also will not improve the water quality, which flows into the ocean ˝ mile south of the project.

What Is to Become of Aliso Creek?

This peaceful canyon is now planned for a new and much taller hotel, permanent residential development, plus a reconfigured golf course.

What can be done to save this gem from too much development? Below is a list of primary concerns if the “Super Project” were to be implemented:

The Laguna Greenbelt Fact:
In 1993, a large firestorm swept across the Laguna Greenbelt, severely altering the land and plant and animal wildlife that call this beautiful land home. The cause of the fire was likely arson. Be sure to report any suspicious activity by dialing 911 with your cell phone.
