Citizens Launch Open Space Initiative to Save Remaining Laguna Beach Open Space

Laguna Greenbelt founder Jim Dilley, circa 1980A group of Laguna Beach volunteers is championing preservation of the City’s remaining open space. They propose raising more than $20 million for this purpose with a voter-approved, 20-year flat parcel tax that will cost each parcel $120 a year, or $10 a month.

The group—State registered as Citizens for Preservation of Open Space—today presented the City Clerk its notice of intent to collect the signatures in support of having voters decide if they like the idea.

Once the group is successful in its signature gathering, the City Council will be asked to schedule an election by the end of the year. Two-thirds plus one of those voting in the election will need to vote “yes” in support, in order for the measure to be adopted and put into effect.

Laguna Greenbelt founder Jim Dilley, circa 1980“In 1990, Laguna Beach voters did something extraordinary in supporting, by nearly 80 percent, a bond measure to save Laguna Canyon. This was critical in preserving the Laguna Greenbelt,” said Elisabeth Brown, spokesperson for Citizens for Preservation of Open Space. [Note: Dr. Brown is president of Laguna Greenbelt, Inc. She is addressing this new citizens initiative in her capacity as spokesperson for Citizens for Preservation of Open Space.]
